“Best Projects” Award of Merit by ENR Southeast

Engineering-News Record (ENR) Southeast recognized SSOE with a “Best Projects” Award of Merit for the design of Purdue Pharmaceutical’s Oral Solid Dosage Manufacturing Facility in Durham, North Carolina. SSOE played a lead role in designing the two-story plant, with services that included site selection, programming, and master planning through construction administration using Virtual Design and Construction (VDC). In 2012, SSOE was ranked by Inc. Magazine as one of the fastest growing private companies in the U.S. based on revenue figures from 2008 to 2011.

SSOE Recipients of ACEC Engineering Excellence Grand Award

SSOE received one of eight Grand Awards for Engineering Excellence at the 2013 Engineering Excellence Awards—a national juried competition sponsored by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). The award, presented in honor of the new Volkswagen Assembly Plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, was presented to SSOE and Volkswagen representatives. Projects throughout the world were rated on the basis of uniqueness and innovative applications, future value to the engineering profession, perception by the public, complexity, successful fulfillment of client / owner’s needs, including schedule and budget, as well as social, economic, and sustainable development considerations. American Institute of Architects (AIA) Toledo Chapter Design Award

SSOE has been honored with a design award for their renovation of Jesup W. Scott High School in Toledo, Ohio. SSOE performed the building renovation for this 1913 facility and accomplished five primary objectives: preserve the historic landmark, recreate a modern school in a timeless structure, maintain the school systems traditions in a building that served as a teaching environment for nearly a century, employ sustainable practices to meet or exceed LEED® Silver certification requirements, and transform the school back to its original grandeur. The Toledo Chapter of the American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) Annual Toledo Design Awards honors design excellence for public and private buildings as well as projects of distinction. SSOE-Designed Volkswagen Chattanooga Plant Named Edison Green Award Gold Winner

SSOE’s Volkswagen Chattanooga Assembly Plant was awarded the prestigious Gold 2012 Edison Green Award, the highest honor among Green Award winners. The award recognizes “excellence personified by Thomas Alva Edison, inspiring the drive to remain in the forefront of innovation, creativity, and ingenuity in the global economy.” The Green Award specifically recognizes the environmental and sustainability achievements at Volkswagen Chattanooga. Parent-Friendly Workplace Award

The Parent-Friendly Workplace Award recognizes a company/organization that is supportive of family obligations and is a great place to work. Employees need flexibility to make decisions in the best interest of their families while meeting their employment responsibilities. This award honors employers who understand and allow that flexibility.

At SSOE, work-life balance is a key value and is one of the factors contributing to our high employee retention rate. An important aspect of attracting and retaining the best people is offering them what they want and need from an employer.

Work-Life Balance Award

Constangy, Brooks, & Smith, LLP, recognized SSOE for superior overall efforts in work-life balance. SSOE’s corporate-wide commitment to work-life balance through the company’s Employee Value Proposition (EVP) which places an emphasis on wealth sharing, skill development, career progression, total compensation and total benefits – including health and wellness, was a key factor in being honored. Tennessee Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Award for Building Green

SSOE, along with leaders from Volkswagen Group of America’s Chattanooga Operations, was awarded the 2011 Tennessee Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Award for Building Green. The award recognizes company’s for their environmentally friendly facilities. SSOE was responsible for overseeing the architecture, engineering, and construction management services for VW’s new $1 billion automobile manufacturing facility located in Chattanooga, Tenn. Many sustainable features were incorporated into the 1,350-acre brownfield site, which is currently pursuing LEED certification. Click here to read more about this project.

Contractor Safety & Environmental Excellence Award

SSOE was awarded the 2011 Contractor Safety & Environmental Excellence Award from Marathon Petroleum LP Marketing & Transportation Engineering. The award recognizes SSOE as a top safety performer for their facility located in Findlay, Ohio. SSOE was chosen as a recipient for this award based on their established safety program and their continued safety training for employees. Click here to read more.

Tallahassee Memorial Cancer Center Project Received National Excellence in Construction Award

SSOE was a National Excellence in Construction Award from Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). The ABC awards seek to recognize the nation’s most innovative and high quality construction projects and safety programs. SSOE’s winning project, the Tallahassee Memorial Cancer Center, was delivered to the client ahead of schedule and below budget — resulting in a 52,000 SF building which was awarded LEED Silver certification. Recognized for Best Public / Private Partnership in Ohio Heritage Awards

A member of Allied Toledo Architects, SSOE worked in conjunction with Toledo Public Schools (TPS) and The Ohio School Facilities Commission (OSFC) to perform the $42 million building renovation for Jesup W. Scott High School’s 1913 facility. SSOE was recognized for “top achievements in preservation and revitalization” across Ohio communities at the 2012 Ohio Heritage Awards. American Institute of Architects (AIA) Toledo Chapter Citation Award

SSOE was honored with a citation award for their design of Sylvania School District’s Northview High School Performing Arts addition and renovation project. SSOE was chosen as a recipient for this award based on the building upgrade complexity. SSOE’s project team faced a number of challenges with the aged building while comprehensively addressing the needs and requirements of the school and working within a limited site. Nashville Business Journal Middle Tennessee’s Healthiest Employers

SSOE was recognized as Middle Tennessee’s Healthiest Employers (Large Company: 500-1,499). Nashville Business Journal honored 20 finalists with offices in Middle Tennessee. The finalists were broken down into five categories, based on size, with one winner named in each category based on overall score. The companies were judged based on wellness programs for employees. Criteria included cultural commitment, foundational components, strategic planning, programming and intervention and reporting and analysis.

U.S. Department of Commerce National Export Achievement Certificate

In 2010, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) visited SSOE to present the firm with an Export Achievement Certificate from the U.S. Department of Commerce. The Export Achievement Certificate was created to recognize small- and medium-sized enterprises and organizations that have successfully entered the international marketplace. Ohio Governor’s Excellence in Exporting Award: Large Exporter of the Year

In 2010, SSOE was recognized for its success in the global marketplace by Ohio Governor Ted Strickland and Ohio Department of Development Director Lisa Patt-McDaniel at a luncheon held in Columbus where SSOE was named “Large Exporter of the Year”. In total, 20 Ohio companies were presented with the Governor’s Excellence in Exporting Award (“E”Award). This is SSOE’s third time being an “E” award recipient; they also received this honor in 2002 as well as 2006. The “E” award annually recognize recognizes Ohio companies that have increased sales and Ohio-based employment as a result of export activity, or have implemented a strategy to expand international sales. Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award

Despite high stress and anxiety levels that often accompany uncertain economic conditions, SSOE has managed to help its employees in living less stressful lives. In 2010, the Ohio Psychological Association (OPA) named SSOE one of four psychologically healthy workplaces. In order to be considered for this award, an application must be submitted to the OPA and a panel of OPA members must conduct a site visit. The workplace is evaluated in five areas: employee involvement, employee growth and development, health and safety, employee recognition, and work-life balance.

Tennessee School Board Association School of the Year (Middle School Division)

The Tennessee School Board Association (TSBA) gave SSOE top honors for our work designing Spring Hill Middle School at the 2010 TSBA annual convention. Click here to read more.

“Cool Place to Work” by Crain’s Detroit Business

Crain’s “Cool Places to Work” is a biennial award recognizing firms for their innovative work-life initiatives, talent management, communication, total rewards, corporate citizenship, work environment, and recruitment activities. SSOE’s industry-leading profit sharing plan, training, professional development program, and work-life balance initiatives were all factors in why SSOE was selected for this honor. University of Toledo Human Resources Award of Excellence

In 2008, SSOE was honored for our outstanding human resources program in the form of the Human Resources Award for Excellence from the University of Toledo and the Toledo Area Human Resources Association. This award was presented based on SSOE’s outstanding recruitment program as well as our clear career progression track, industry leading 401(k) and profit sharing plans, flexible benefits program, wellness program, and training and development program—all resulting in our high retention rate.
