SSOE received one of eight Grand Awards for Engineering Excellence at the 2013 Engineering Excellence Awards—a national juried competition sponsored by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). The award, presented in honor of the new Volkswagen Assembly Plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, was presented to SSOE and Volkswagen representatives. SSOE has been honored with a design award for their renovation of Jesup W. Scott High School in Toledo, Ohio. SSOE performed the building renovation for this 1913 facility and accomplished five primary objectives: preserve the historic landmark, recreate a modern school in a timeless structure, maintain the school systems traditions in a building that served as a teaching environment for nearly a century, employ sustainable practices to meet or exceed LEED® Silver certification requirements, and transform the school back to its original grandeur. The Toledo Chapter of the American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) Annual Toledo Design Awards honors design excellence for public and private buildings as well as projects of distinction. SSOE’s Volkswagen Chattanooga Assembly Plant was awarded the prestigious Gold 2012 Edison Green Award, the highest honor among Green Award winners. SSOE, along with leaders from Volkswagen Group of America’s Chattanooga Operations, was awarded the 2011 Tennessee Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Award for Building Green. The award recognizes company’s for their environmentally friendly facilities. SSOE was responsible for overseeing the architecture, engineering, and construction management services for VW’s new $1 billion automobile manufacturing facility located in Chattanooga, Tenn. SSOE was awarded the 2011 Contractor Safety & Environmental Excellence Award from Marathon Petroleum LP Marketing & Transportation Engineering. The award recognizes SSOE as a top safety performer for their facility located in Findlay, Ohio. SSOE was a National Excellence in Construction Award from Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). The ABC awards seek to recognize the nation’s most innovative and high quality construction projects and safety programs. SSOE’s winning project, the Tallahassee Memorial Cancer Center, was delivered to the client ahead of schedule and below budget — resulting in a 52,000 SF building which was awarded LEED Silver certification. SSOE, as a member of Allied Toledo Architects, worked in conjunction with Toledo Public Schools (TPS) and The Ohio School Facilities Commission (OSFC) to perform the $42 million building renovation for Jesup W. SSOE was honored with a citation award for their design of Sylvania School District’s Northview High School Performing Arts addition and renovation project. SSOE was chosen as a recipient for this award based on the building upgrade complexity. SSOE’s project team faced a number of challenges with the aged building while comprehensively addressing the needs and requirements of the school and working within a limited site. Nashville Business Journal honored 20 finalists, who had to have an office in Middle Tennessee. The finalists were broken down into five categories, based on size, with one winner named in each category based on overall score. The companies were judged based on wellness programs for employees. Criteria included cultural commitment, foundational components, strategic planning, programming and intervention and reporting and analysis.
U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) visited SSOE Group to present the firm with an Export Achievement Certificate from the U.S. Department of Commerce. The Export Achievement Certificate from the U.S. Department of Commerce was created to recognize small and medium sized enterprises and organizations that have successfully entered the international marketplace. SSOE was recognized for its success in the global marketplace by Ohio Governor Ted Strickland and Ohio Department of Development Director Lisa Patt-McDaniel at a luncheon held in Columbus. SSOE was named the “Large Exporter of the Year.” In total, 20 Ohio companies were presented with the Governor’s Excellence in Exporting Award (“E”Award). This is SSOE’s third time being an “E” award recipient; they also received this honor in 2002 as well as 2006. The Governor’s Excellence in Exporting Award annually recognize recognizes Ohio companies that have increased sales and Ohio-based employment as a result of export activity, or have implemented a strategy to expand international sales. Despite high stress and anxiety levels that often accompany uncertain economic conditions, SSOE Group has managed to help its employees in living less stressful lives. In an awards ceremony on November 19th, the Ohio Psychological Association (OPA) named SSOE one of four psychologically healthy workplaces. In order to be considered for this award, an application must be submitted to the OPA and a panel of OPA members must conduct a site visit. The workplace is evaluated on five areas: employee involvement, employee growth and development, health and safety, employee recognition and work-life balance.
