Alternative Fuel Facts & Figures

ETHANOL

• An average 40 million gallon ethanol plant =
– 32 full-time jobs
– $1.2 million additional tax revenue for a community.
• 1 acre of corn =
– enough ethanol to run a car for 72,000 miles on E-10 Unleaded (a 10% ethanol, 90% gasoline blend).
• 1 barrel of ethanol produced =
– 1.2 barrels of petroleum displaced.
• By 2010 U.S. ethanol production could displace 311,000 barrels of imported crude oil per day this =
– more than 1 large oil tanker per week.
• 1 bushel of corn =
– 2.8 gallons of ethanol.
• Growing and processing corn into ethanol =
– 67% more energy than the production process itself requires—making this a truly renewable resource.
• Ethanol production in the U.S. in 2005 =
– a record 3.904 billion gallons
– a 139 % increase from 2000.

BIODIESEL

• Every unit of energy needed to produce a gallon of biodiesel =
– 3.24 units of energy.
• A study by the U.S.D.A. found that an annual increase of 200 million gallons of soy-based biodiesel demand would =
– a boost in total crop cash receipts of $5.2 billion by 2010
– an average net farm income increase of $300 million per year.
• The ozone forming potential of biodiesel hydrocarbon emissions =
– 50% less than those measured for diesel fuel.
• Sulfur emissions =
– Virtually zero with pure biodiesel.
• Production and use of biodiesel, compared to petroleum diesel =
– a 78.5% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.
• Exhaust emissions of carbon monoxide from biodiesel =
– 48% less than diesel.
• Breathing particulate has been shown to be a human health hazard. Exhaust emissions of particulate matter from biodiesel =
– 47% less than diesel.
