Mechanical Engineer (Industrial Ventilation)

Position Summary

SSOE is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our team in one of our Southeast office locations. This position has immediate opportunities to be assigned to a global client for Industrial Ventilation design.

Qualified candidates have experience in the design and preparation of mechanical construction documents for industrial facilities, including HVAC, piping systems, fire protection and plumbing. Experience with AutoCAD and HVAC load calculations required. Must be detailed oriented. Specifically, extensive experience with Industrial Ventilation is a must.

This role is open for consider for the following office locations: Brentwood, Tennessee; Birmingham, Alabama; Huntsville, Alabama.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform routine design assignments, with increasing responsibility, under the direction of a senior engineer.
  • Create own designs and use example/prototype designs of others, perform sizing computations of system components and equipment.
  • Create drawings in both AutoCAD and MicroStation platforms. Apply designated AutoCAD standards for layering, line weights and symbols.
  • Develop project details, prepare and adapt design alternatives.
  • Possess and maintain working knowledge of International Mechanical and Plumbing Codes; ensure designs meet code requirements.
  • Working knowledge of system component details and associated specs.
  • Performs routine design calculations.
  • Will select equipment based on design calculations.
  • May assign and direct the drafting effort of team members, within own discipline and coordinate work effort with other disciplines.
  • Research equipment selection or materials and incorporate into design drawings.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree / DIRECT / 3-5
OSHA 10/30-hour Construction Certificate preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, which qualifies for licensure in the state of practice, is required.
  • Candidate must have or be pursuing PE certification and LEED AP.
  • Five or more years of related practical experience. Experience with medium to large sized industrial or manufacturing projects preferred.
  • Working knowledge of system component details and associated specs.
  • Possess and maintain working knowledge of International Mechanical and Plumbing Codes; ensure designs meet code requirements.
  • Participate in continuing education and training to develop and apply innovative ideas and keep abreast of state of the art technology (e.g. learn to use design software and equipment sizing packages; Trane Trace).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including ability to actively engage with staff outside of local office.
  • Ability and willingness to mentor junior-level staff.
  • Due to the travel associated with this role, a Valid Driver’s License and ability to qualify for company auto insurance is required.
