SSOE Group was selected, through a competitive proposal process, to assist Ford Motor Company with the first phase (programming, schematic design, and pricing) of renovations of three existing buildings located on Ford’s Dearborn Campus. The purpose of this exercise was to give Ford the opportunity to start a green initiative (saving and reusing the existing structures), while creating 21st Century Workplace environments that will become a tool for retaining and attracting new staff.
Built in the 1950’s, the existing structures are currently being used by various departments for research, engineering, and offices. SSOE’s tasks included conducting programming meetings, providing complete assessment of the building (structural, infrastructure, mechanical systems, electrical systems, plumbing and fire protection systems, universal accessibility / ADA review, and complete review and evaluation of the building envelopes of the buildings, schematic design plans and exterior images), and assisting the construction manger with the pricing exercise at the end of this phase.
SSOE design team’s findings suggested a complete renovation of all three buildings, keeping only the building shells and sections of interior building cores. The assessment also proposed upgrades based on new floor layouts, finishes, MEP / IT infrastructure, and energy conservation upgrades with the goal of achieving LEED Silver Certification. Additionally, all three buildings will be connected with new, covered skywalks with seating in lounge areas located in the centers of the walkways, between buildings.
After completion of the next phase of the project, all three buildings will be utilized as office spaces by multiple departments. The new 21st Century Workplace designs reflect Ford’s commitment to creating healthy buildings that are open and encourage collaboration. SSOE’s final designs successfully delivered Ford’s vision for these facilities to become welcoming and functional workplaces, through LEAN and flexible designs of secure, technologically advanced, and easily accessible facilities.
