SSOE teamed with NOVA Engineering to provide forensic engineering evaluation, repair design, and construction administration services at the historic Sweetwater Creek Mill Ruins in Lithia Springs, Georgia.
History Of The Ruins
The Mill, which was constructed from 1846-1849, was a five-story water-powered mill used for the production of clothing and other materials. During the 1860’s, it produced Confederate Civil War uniforms, until its demise in 1864 at the hands of the Union Troops as part of the Atlanta Campaign. Currently, the remnants of the structure are being preserved, including the original mass masonry brick walls set on cut stone foundations.
Project Goals
The goal of this project was to shore existing masonry components around architectural features such as the original window openings and archways and help reduce continued erosion to better prolong the life of the structure.
SSOE’s work included site due diligence and documentation of the Sweetwater Creek Mill Ruin. Work included a point cloud scan of the ruin and conversion into a BIM model for use in determining the degradation of the structure and providing base documentation for future remediation. The team proposed multiple options for stabilization and interpretive viewing and display of the structure.
