ATLANTA, Georgia, January 2, 2021 – SSOE Group (www.ssoe.com), an internationally ranked architecture and engineering firm, is proud to announce that the Oxford College of Emory University’s new Student Center received The Atlanta Chapter of The American Institute of Architects (AIA Atlanta) 2020 People’s Choice Award. The project won in the Renovation/Restoration category.
The People’s Choice Awards are voted on by members of the community online. In order to be eligible for this design award, the project must be completed by a registered architect or firm who lives or does work throughout the state of Georgia.
The project scope included the renovation of a recently replaced mid-century Dining Hall, a two-level addition, and site improvements that successfully integrated the project into the University’s existing pathways and plazas. Since its completion, the Student Center has quickly presented itself as the main central hub on campus, enticing students to explore the new building’s vibrant and energetic interiors. While acknowledging the physical artifact of the existing structure, the renovation also looks to the future through its implementation of a number of sustainability features. These new and innovative elements increased overall building efficiencies of up to a 40% decrease in electricity and water use respectively.
Working in conjunction with the owner and key project stakeholders, the new design is one that deeply resonates with not only the client, but also students, faculty, staff, and the surrounding community. In addition to winning AIA Atlanta’s 2020 People’s Choice Award, the project has also received a Silver Citation from the American School & University Magazine’s Educational Interiors Showcase and the 2019 Honor Award from the Georgia Chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies.
